A method of reducing surface roughness of a metallic component made by additive manufacturing by placing the component 1 in a chamber, filling the chamber with a combustible gas mixture and igniting the gas mixture thereby exposing the surface of the component to at least one thermal pulse. The thermal pulse or pulses can be at a temperature which is greater than the melting point of the metallic component and be explosive ignition. The method can be used to reduce roughness caused by remnants of support structures formed during the additive manufacturing process. The component can be heat treated prior to application of the thermal pulse and/or the component can be abrasively cleaned (e.g. abrasive blasting) after the application of the thermal pulse, thereby removing surface oxides. Application of one or more thermal pulses can also be used on components made by additive manufacturing prior to their separation from support structures to weaken or break interfaces between the component and supports. |
