[Class 79 (iii).] Coupling means between a steering handwheel and its shaft, adapted to be locked with the handwheel either fast or loose on the shaft, at the same time controlling the ignition circuit so that the engine cannot be started when the handwheel is loose, comprises a central boss C on the handwheel mounted on a sleeve A<1> secured to the shaft, as by a grub screw A', the boss carrying one or more bolts F<2>, F3 slidable radially into or out of engagement with apertures A8, A9 in the sleeve under the control of a rotary cap or enclosing member E with an internal cam surface and a key operated barrel lock D<1> operating a bolt D for locking the cap to the boss C in either of its two operative positions. The bolts F<2>, F<3>, which are urged apart by a spring H<1>, Fig. 2, accommodated in a slot H in the boss C, bear at their outer ends against the walls of an elongated cam recess E<1>, E<2> in the cap E so that when the cap is rotated through 90‹ from the position shown the bolts are withdrawn from engagement with the sleeve A<1> leaving the handwheel loose thereon, the cap being adapted to be locked in this position by engagement of the bolt D with a recess C<1> in the boss. In the position shown, in which the handwheel is secured to the shaft A, the cap is locked by engagement of the bolt D with a recess C<2> in the boss. A spring pressed ball C<3> engaging a recess in the sleeve indicates alignment of the bolts F2, F<3> with the apertures A<8>, A<9>. Removal of the cap E is normally prevented by a set screw A<6> protruding into a recessed part of the boss C beneath an end plate A<4> secured to the sleeve A<1>, a pair of spaced pins A<7> on either side of the screw regulating the rotary play of the cap. By withdrawing the screw A<6>, the cap may be removed when the boss is secured to the shaft. The ignition control comprises a spring contact strip J which is lifted off a terminal J<2> by a plunger J<3> raised by the inclined end of the bolt F<2> as this is moved into engagement with the sleeve A<1>. A modified construction is described in which the spring H<1> is eliminated, the bolts F<2>, F<3> being formed with T-shaped heads engaging undercut grooves formed in the wall of the cam recess E<1>, E<2>.
