A keycap comprises a glyph, 4,5 made of a polarizing material having a first plane of polarization that is placed on a transparent top 10 of the keycap housing; a liquid crystal 11 panel disposed inside the housing underneath the glyph; and a polarizing filter 17 having a second plane of polarization between the liquid crystal panel and a lit carrier plate 25. The glyph is backlit by carrier plate 25 which can reflect ambient light or be transparent with a light source below it and is selectively visible by rotating the polarisation plane of polarised light. The glyph can be smaller than the liquid crystal panel and is visible depending on whether the liquid crystal is active and whether it is polarised in parallel or perpendicular to the polarisation plane of the filter. There can be two or more glyphs aligned with two partitions (fig 3, 15a,15c) of the liquid crystal panel that are independently controlled to selectively rotate light through each partition. The glyph can be made of an adhesive film on the top of the housing or the liquid crystal panel and have an alignment feature. |
