A package or container includes a side wall, the side wall having an inner surface and an outer surface. At least one of the inner surface or the outer surface of the side wall may be at least partially coated by a layer of a thermally expandable material. The material may be adapted to be expanded to provide thermal insulation.

1. A double-wall container, comprising:
an inner wall; an outer wall attached to the inner wall, where the inner wall and the outer wall form an air gap therebetween; an expandable coating comprising expandable microspheres, the expandable coating applied between the inner wall and the outer wall such that the expandable coating engages both the inner wall and the outer wall, the expandable coating having expanded, non-ruptured microspheres when the outer wall is permanently attached to the inner wall; and an adhesive material different than the expandable coating, the adhesive material applied between the inner wall and the outer wall and attaching the inner wall to the outer wall.
