In a method of making a tool comprising a hard metal portion consisting of a sintered mixture of a carbide and an auxiliary metal, and a supporting portion or carrier, the whole tool, or at least the hard metal portion, after its union with the support, is heated to a temperature of about 800-1,250 DEG C. and then cooled rapidly or slowly, gradually or stepwise. The hard metal portion may comprise one or more of the carbides of tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, tantalum, vanadium, zirconium, silicon, manganese, and aluminium, admixed with 3-25 per cent of one or more of the metals iron, nickel, cobalt, and copper and if desired, about 0.5-2 per cent of chromium, calcium, molybdenum, aluminium, &c., as hardening agents. |
