The present invention relates to a controller in particular for a hand hygiene compliance monitoring system. The controller is preferably configured to detect contact between a HCW and a patient. The controller is configured to receive first distance information to determine first position information representing a position of at least one person and person identification information for identifying the at least one person. The controller is configured to receive an image and to determine second position information relating to the position of an imaged person based on the second distance information. The controller is configured to compare the first and the second position information and to identify the at least one person at the position represented by the first position information with the at least one person at the position represented by the second position information when the first position information matches the second position information.
