[Problem] Conventional glass Durham tubes used in qualitative inspection for coliforms and the like are expensive and could possibly break. The present invention addresses the problem of providing an inspection method that follows conventional inspection methods while being low-cost and facilitating assessment, without the use of glass Durham tubes. [Solution] In order to solve the problem, provided is a sample inspection method that includes: a preparation step for placing a sample and a culture solution into a vessel; a Durham tube setting step for placing a Durham tube, which is configured so as to float in the vessel due to gas accumulating at the top end of the Durham tube, within the vessel with the opening of the Durham tube facing downward and no gas accumulated therein; and an observation step for observing whether the Durham tube floats in the vessel from the accumulation of sample-derived gas in the culture solution.
