The terminal reads information from a payment device in a contactless manner to determine an account in a currency that is the local currency or another currency. If the identified account is in a currency that is the local currency the transaction is processed in the local currency If the identified account is in a currency that is other than the local currency the terminal attempts to obtain an exchange rate to process the transaction in another currency.
