1. A method for treating a subject having sepsis, the method comprising:
a) measuring a level of acetoacetate or a level of 3-hydroxybutyrate in a sample from the subject; b) identifying the subject as a carnitine responsive subject if the acetoacetate level is less than or equal to 25 μM or the 3-hydroxybutyrate level is less than or equal to 150 μM; and b) administering carnitine to a carnitine responsive subject. |
