An electrically operated smoking device (100) configured to receive a smoking article, comprising: a housing (10) defining a cavity for at least partially receiving a smoking article (12); and a sensing system for detecting indicia on the smoking article, the sensing system positioned on a periphery of the cavity and comprising a light source, a mirror, an imaging lens and an image detector, wherein the mirror is positioned on an internal surface of the cavity adjacent to the light source and the imaging lens. The provision of a mirror on an internal surface of the cavity allows for a wide field of view to be imaged in a small space.
