The device (1) has a gasket (2), which is held on the primary machine component (10) and is sealed on the secondary machine component (12). A biasing element (3) is acted upon with a fluid for applying a bias on the sealing gasket. The bias is variably applied on the biasing element of the gasket. A controller (4) is provided for variable actuation of the biasing element provided with a fluid. The fluid acting upon the biasing element is substantially pressure switchable for cleaning and sterilization of the device. An independent claim is included for a method for sealing a primary machine component against a secondary machine component in a beverage filling system, particularly for sealing a shaft passage through a housing.
