Embodiments of the present invention provide a communication initiation method and a terminal device, including: detecting a dragging path formed when a user touches a display interface of the terminal device and drags a touch point; determining a target communication object and a target communication manner according to the dragging path; and initiating communication to the target communication object by using the target communication manner. Using the foregoing technical solution, the user can complete a communication activity by means of continuous input at a time, thereby reducing operation costs of the user and improving use efficiency.
