[Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIII, XI, and XVII] Shaped glass articles are sprayed with metals such as aluminium or zinc or their alloys while they are still hot from the shaping operation and preferably above 800‹ F. As shown metal wire 9 is fed to a spray gun 8 to which a gaseous blast is supplied so as to produce a flame for melting the wire and blowing the molten metal against the glass. The edge of the metal coating may be irregular as shown at 12. A regular edge may be given with the help of an incombustible mask. The process may be used for lining the glass dome at the top of a coffee percolator as well as coating the bottom and may be used for providing a reflecting surface for illuminating ware or advertising signs and for coating bottles to strengthen them and render them opaque. Fig. 5 shows a metal coating applied for strengthening purposes to the neck of a glass lamp globe.
