PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new production method of a binaphthalene compound that is suitable as a monomer for forming a resin (optical resin) constituting an optical member represented by an optical lens or an optical film.SOLUTION: In the production of 2,2'-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-1,1'-binaphthalene from 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol and ethylene carbonate, use amounts of the 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol and of the ethylene carbonate are controlled to obtain a ratio (molar ratio) of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol/ethylene carbonate ranging from 1/1.9 to 1/2.4, and the reaction is carried out in the coexistence of a non-reactive organic solvent in an amount as 0.1 to 4 times by weight as the 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol. Thus, it was found that 2,2'-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-1,1'-binaphthalene with high purity and little coloring can be easily and efficiently produced in an industrial scale. |
