An engine 10 and particle decelerator 22 is provided herein. The engine has an inlet opening for directing air 24 towards a compressor 16 of the engine 10, and a particle decelerator 22 located between the inlet opening and the compressor 16. Air travelling towards the compressor 16 from the inlet opening must travel through the particle decelerator 22, and an area of the particle decelerator 22 is greater than an inlet and an outlet of the particle decelerator 22. A second particle decelerator may be provided between a combustor and a turbine.
