A wind turbine 10, which is designed to start rotating in lower wind speeds than is conventionally possible, comprising a power take off shaft 16 on which a first rotor 18 is mounted, the first rotor having a first diameter, and on which a rotatable augmenter in the form of a second rotor 22 is mounted coaxially of the first rotor, the second rotor having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, where the second rotor effects rotation of the first rotor. Preferably the first rotor cannot effect rotation of the second rotor. The second rotor may be coupled to the first rotor via clutch. The primary rotors blades may be pitched to provide a lower start up torque of the second rotor and the blades may have roots secured radially outwardly the shaft and be captured between a pair of annular shrouds 28. The Augmenter may also comprise vortex generators. |
