[Class 132 (ii)] A bat for projecting and catching a ball, shuttle-cock, or table tennis ball has cord or gut threaded through the bat co provide a substantially endless pocket carrying part constituting the boundary of an aperture in the striking surface of the bat and also the mouth of the pocket. The bat 1 has parts of some of the strings omitted to provide an opening 4, the boundary of which may be constituted by four thick and doubled strings 5 to which is joined by loops or knots the ends of the pocket 3. The strings forming the pocket 3 can be carried from the frame 1 and secured under tension to the strings 5 by suitable knotting and continued in a loose manner to form the pocket 3. To compensate for loss in tension of the stringing a suitable number of diagonal strings 7 are provided. The pocket 3 can accommodate itself on either side of the bat and may be situated near the junction of the frame and handle of the bat or near the head of the bat.</p> |
