An apparatus and method for monitoring wellheads includes at least one sensor for monitoring the pressure of a wellhead. The at least one sensor is connected to a transmitter. A communication unit has a receiver, a communication modem and a remote terminal unit. The remote terminal unit collects pressure data and time data from the sensor and monitors the pressure data for changes in wellhead pressure. The remote terminal unit calculates moving averages based upon pressure data from the sensor and has an alarm triggerable at preset pressure set points. A power source is connected to the communication unit. A communications antenna is provided to allow for communication between the remote terminal unit and a central monitoring station. The central monitoring station receives pressure data, time data and alarm data from the remote terminal unit. The central monitoring station stores the data on a database for real time and historical pressure measurements. This apparatus is used to identify potentially affected wells and send out notifications to the responsible parties at potentially affected wells. The apparatus is deployed to each potentially affected well. Data is collected, stored and monitored by the remote terminal unit and is transmitted to the central monitoring station and stored on a database. Notifications of triggered alarms are sent from the central monitoring station to the responsible parties at affected wells.
