A portable power unit is provided that can be embodied in backpack, waist-pack, or other portable form. The portable power unit can include a battery, a bidirectional power processor, and a power port. The bidirectional power processor allows for direct current (DC) power exchange between the battery and the bidirectional power processor and a user selectable alternating current (AC) or DC power exchange between the bidirectional power processor and a power port through which a power source and an external load can be connected for charging and discharging of the electrochemical battery, respectively.

1. A portable power unit, comprising:
an electrochemical battery; a bidirectional power processor configured to provide direct current (DC) power exchange between the electrochemical battery and the bidirectional power processor and a user selectable alternating current (AC) or DC power exchange between the bidirectional power processor and a power port through which a power source and an external load can be connected for charging and discharging of the electrochemical battery, respectively, wherein the bidirectional power processor comprises a controller, a plurality of switching poles, each connected in parallel with the electrochemical battery and a first capacitor connected in parallel with the electrochemical battery; a first inductor connected between a phase node of a second switching pole of the plurality of switching poles and a first terminal of the power port; and a second inductor connected between a phase node of a third switching pole of the plurality of switching poles and a second terminal of the power port.
