Pet Food Compositions Having Antimicrobial Activity

The present invention relates to new food compositions, particularly pet food compositions, which are resistant to microbial contamination, and methods for making the same. The compositions comprise an ingredient in an effective amount to impart antimicrobial activity.

1. A method for making a pet food composition, comprising:
preconditioning the pet food composition, wherein precondition comprises mixing wet and dry ingredients at elevated temperature to form a kibble dough; extruding the kibble dough; drying the extruded kibble; enrobing the dried kibble with topical liquid and/or dry ingredients; and applying an ingredient having an antimicrobial effect on the pet food composition to the kibble when preconditioning the pet food composition and/or enrobing the dry kibble, wherein the ingredient having the antimicrobial effect on the pet food composition exhibits activity against spoilage microorganisms.
