Hybrid Sand Control Systems and Methods for Completing a Wellbore with Sand Control

A hybrid sand control system is provided herein. The sand control system is designed to reside and operate within a wellbore, preferably a wellbore that has been completed horizontally. The system utilizes compliant and non-compliant sand control assemblies placed in the wellbore across one or more zones of interest. The system has particular utility in connection with the control of sand migration across these zones within a surrounding open-hole portion of a wellbore. A method for completing a wellbore in a subsurface formation using the hybrid sand control system is also provided herein.

1. A hybrid sand control system residing within a wellbore, comprising:
a plurality of compliant sand control assemblies, each compliant sand control assembly comprising:
an elongated base pipe, the base pipe having a first end and a second end, andat least one opening formed in the base pipe between the first and second ends, the opening being configured to allow an ingress of wellbore production fluids when positioned within the open hole portion, anda material placed along at least a portion of the length of the base pipe of the compliant sand control assembly, the material fabricated to engage a surrounding wellbore wall to control a migration of particles outside of the base pipes in response to an expansion force; a plurality of fixed sand control assemblies, each fixed sand control assembly comprising:
at least one elongated base pipe, each base pipe having a first end and a second end and being in fluid communication with the base pipes of the plurality of compliant sand control assemblies,at least one opening formed in the base pipe between the first and second ends, the opening being configured to allow an ingress of wellbore production fluids when positioned within the open hole portion; anda filter medium disposed around each of the at least one base pipes of the fixed sand control assemblies, the filter medium extending substantially along the length of each corresponding base pipe without compliantly engaging the surrounding wellbore wall; wherein the compliant sand control assemblies and the fixed sand control assemblies are positioned along the open hole portion in alternating relation.
