[Class 74 (ii)] Circular machines.-In a machine with axially opposed needle cylinders 1, 2 and yarn feeding means and knitting cams at a plurality of points as A, B, a rotary patterning device 11 having radially and longitudnally movable selectors 52 is provided at one or more of the feeds, said selectors automatically dividing and controlling the needles in either or both cylinders so that needles knit at different points and needles which knit at one point do not knit at the other point or points. As shown, pins 58 in a pattern drum 57 project cam levers 56 which engage butts 53 at different heights on the selectors 52. As the selector drum 51 rotates, the selectors 52 are lowered by the fixed cam 59 and raised by the fixed cam 66. Any selector 52 not pushed in by its cam 56 will at the point 11<a>, Fig. 3, depress a jack 7 and the corresponding slider 6, the butt of which passes through the clearing track 25 to the lower cam path 24. The jack is immediately raised by the part 21 of an auxiliary cam 34 in the same box as but above the main knitting cam, and the upper end of the jack passes behind a half ring 12 with a cam leading end 12a in the same cam box above the cam 34. In this position the upper 9 of the two butts of the jack is held out of action. The unselected jacks are engaged by the cam end 12<a> of the ring 12 and rocked to bring their butts 9 into action. The selected needles are lifted by the cam 27 and knit at the feed A but their butts pass along the track a<5> and do not knit at the feed B. The butts of the unselected needles pass along the track c. At the point c<1> the part 14 of the auxiliary cam 34 depresses the unselected jacks and needles so that the butts of these needles pass through the space 39 to be acted on by the cam 33 and thus knit at feed B. A cam 15 radially depresses the unselected jacks into position for reselection. The selector drum 51 is mounted on the drive shaft 60 for the upper cylinder 1 and is capable of slight angular adjustment thereon. The pattern drum 57 is driven by pawl and ratchet mechanism 92 and a cam 64 on the needle cylinder 1. This drive can be held out of action automatically by means of a pattern controlled lever 100 which may at the same time lower a cam, (not shown), immediately below the cam 59 for retracting all the selectors 52 and thus annulling the action of the whole patterning device 11. Striping attachments may be provided at the feeds, The cams are arranged to permit reciprocation of the cylinders for making heel pockets, &c. |
