[Class 39 (i)] [See also Group XIII] The metal envelope of an electric discharge device is cooled by a liquid which has substantially no hydrogen ions, as described in the parent Specification, and the liquid consists of an aromatic or aliphatic compound, e.g. trichlorethyline, chlorethane, carbon tetrachloride or alphachloronaphthaline. An evaporative cooler having a liquid which boils at 40-80‹ C. may be used. Impurities in the liquid may be removed by treatment with alkaline material such as soda lye, soda or calcium hydroxide either in the solid state or dissolved in water, alcohol or mixtures thereof. Carbon tetrachloride may be boiled with alcoholic potash lye in a vessel having a reflux cooler, and when cool is drawn off and washed with water ; it is subsequently dried with the aid of phosphorus pentoxide.
