A vehicle supercharger assembly 30a, comprising: an input having a shaft 48 and pulley 50 adapted for drive from a source of motive power such as engine 36, an impeller 32, and a magnetic gear 38 comprising an input member 46 that is coupled to the input, an output member 44 arranged to drive the impeller 32, and a rotatable control member 44 which is rotatable with a rotational speed that determines a speed ratio between the input member and the output member. Also included is an electric machine 62a coupled to the rotatable control member 44 and operable to drive rotation of the rotatable control member to adjust the rotational speed of the impeller 32. The assembly may also incorporate a generator (74, fig.4). Use of a magnetic gearbox provides a controllable gear ratio to drive the impeller at the desired speed with lower frictional losses. A method of operation and a computer program are also claimed. |
