Apparatus for stabilising an agitator shaft 24 in a mixing vessel 10, where said mixing vessel has an outlet located in the base, the apparatus comprises: a shaft receiving bearing 30; a support arrangement 32 for supporting the shaft receiving bearing 30 and for spacing the bearing from the outlet of the mixing vessel. The support arrangement 32 comprises a vortex reducing formation which comprises one or more, preferably four or six, substantially equally spaced vanes extending radially outwardly from a central axis. A further independent claim is for mixing apparatus comprising: a mixing vessel 10 comprising: an inlet 40; an outlet 34; a rotatable agitator shaft 24 extending into the mixing vessel; an impeller 26 attached to the shaft 24; and apparatus for stabilising the shaft comprising: a shaft receiving bearing 30 and a support arrangement 32 wherein the support arrangement comprises a vortex reducing formation. A portion of the vortex reducing formation terminates above the outlet port and the vortex reducing formation extends at least partially into the outlet port. The mixing vessel 10 is preferably a reactor 10 used for a gas-liquid reaction and preferably contains a gas dispersion ring. |
