A horizontal chain link (3) for connecting two vertical chain links fitted into it for a conveyor chain of a scraper conveyor. The horizontal chain link (3) has one or more functional areas (Fl-F4)) on its outer side pointing away from its interior (7). In addition, the horizontal chain link (3) possesses around its circumference an identical or substantially similar cross sectional height (H) and an identical or substantially similar cross sectional width (N) determining the nominal diameter of the horizontal chain link (3). Said at least one functional area (F1-F4) is arranged recessed inwards with respect to a virtual curved surface area (E) enveloping the height (H) and the width (N) of the horizontal chain link (3) in such a functional area (F1-F4).
