Disclosed is a method wherein an article of merchandise is provided with at least two labels; one encoded with an optical label identifier (i.e. QR code) and one encoded with a radio frequency identification (RFID) label identifier. Information regarding each identifier is stored in a data store so that each article of merchandise, or product, is associated with its optical tag identifier and RFID tag identifier. A customer mobile device (equipped with optical scanner) scans the optical label of a product, and queries the data store using the identifier to determine if the product is for sale. If the identifier is found in the data store and the item of merchandise is for sale, product information is transmitted to the customer mobile device, which is then used to affect a purchase transaction of the item. When the product is sold, the data store is updated to reflect this (e.g. by a SOLD status), and the RFID tag may be deactivated by a KILL command. An exit RFID reader determines whether to activate a security alert when the product enters a read range of the reader. In another embodiment, a cloud-based server and a local processing machine are utilised. |
