[Class 74 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] To produce an elastic helical conductive cord on a braiding-machine, resilient threads 5 are fed under tension parallel to a core but spaced therefrom by the braided covering 3. A second braided covering 4 takes in the threads 5. The core may consist of two insulated conductors 1 with which a textile ' filling 2 is twisted. The threads 5, when not in tension, draw the cord into helical coils. The braiding-machine has the usual arrangement of centre-discs &c., forming two sets of interlacing passages and an additional track consisting of passages 20, switches 21, &c. The rubber threads 5 pass up through tubes 13 forming axles for some of the outer driving pinions, and situated adjacent to the inner track. When the bobbins pass through the tracks 20, the rubber threads are not caught in the cord. They are subsequently cut off and bound round at the places 6 when they come through the surface of the braid. The core is preferably supplied in cut lengths hooked together, the ends 7 being covered with oiled linen. The braid 4 forms a continuous covering over the cut lengths. After the places 6 have been bound, the covering may be cut to release the ends 7. The braid is laid tightly over the ends 7, but in the parts where the rubber threads are laid in the braid is looser, being taken up over a wire extending into the braiding eye. When tight braiding is required, this wire is withdrawn. The complete cord is shaped by being wound on a former after steam treatment. |
