A method of forming a gas-producing material, comprising comminuting a foamed polymer and combining the comminuted foam polymer with a nitrogen-containing fuel and an oxidiser. The method may also comprise combining water with the comminuted foam polymer, nitrogen-containing fuel and oxidiser to form a paste, then drying the paste. Preferably the foam polymer is a phenolic resin foam and may be an open-cell foam. The foamed polymer may be formed by a curing reaction between a liquid resole, preferably a phenolic resole, and an acid hardener for the resole. The nitrogen-containing fuel may be a guanidine salt or derivative, preferably cyanoguanidine. The oxidiser may be selected from alkali metal nitrates, perchlorates or carbonates, preferably potassium nitrate or potassium carbonate. Additional components may also be selected from binders, burn rate modifiers, flame inhibition chemicals and/or additional oxidising agents. Also disclosed is a gas-producing material comprising a comminuted foam polymer, a nitrogen-containing fuel and an oxidiser. The gas-producing material may be used for suppressing a fire. The use of a comminuted foam polymer for reducing cyanide emissions and increasing the burn temperature of said gas-producing material is also disclosed. |
