CREDIT CARD READER AUTHENTICATOR

A credit card reader is attached to a mobile device to process credit card transactions at the point of sale. In response to detecting attachment of the credit card reader to the mobile device, the credit card reader displays a one-time password for authenticating the credit card reader. The algorithm used to generate the one-time password is synchronized with a user token configured to display one-time passwords. If there is a match between the one-time passwords of the credit card reader and the token, the credit card reader is authentic. Further, if there is a match, the credit card reader may allow the user to process credit card transactions through the credit card reader.

1. A handheld payment card reader device comprising:
a communication mechanism configured to communicate with a mobile device; a card reader mechanism configured to obtain data from a card; an output device; one or more processors that are operatively coupled with the output device, the communication mechanism and the card reader mechanism; and memory including instructions executable by the one or more processors that when executed by the one or more processors cause the one or more processors to:
generate a one-time password, the one-time password having an expiration and being synchronized with a user device usable to verify the one-time password; andcause the output device to display the one-time password to enable use of the user device from outside of the handheld payment card reader device to authenticate the handheld payment card reader device when the one-time password matches another one-time password displayed on the user device.
