The invention relates to the field of road traffic monitoring, and more particularly to a method and system for determining the speed of a vehicle on an extended stretch of road. The technical result is an increase in the accuracy with which the average speed of a vehicle is determined on a monitored stretch of road. The claimed result is achieved using a method for determining the average speed of a vehicle on an extended stretch of road, comprising steps in which: the length S of a monitoring zone on a stretch of road is determined; means for registering the passage of a vehicle are mounted at the beginning and end of said zone, each of the means for registering the passage of a vehicle being capable of virtually dividing the visible portion of the road into a plurality of vehicle capture zones Nz; the registration number of a vehicle, the time of passage T1 of the vehicle and the number of a vehicle capture zone Nz1, determined on the basis of a photographic shot taken by the means for registering a vehicle at the entry to the monitoring zone of the stretch of road, are determined and recorded; the registration number of the vehicle, the time of passage T2 of the vehicle and the number of a vehicle capture zone Nz2, determined on the basis of a photographic shot taken by the means for registering a vehicle at the exit from the monitoring zone of the stretch of road, are determined and recorded; the distance S' travelled by the vehicle is determined on the basis of the numbers of the zones Nz1 and Nz2 in which the vehicle was captured and the lengths Lz1 and Lz2 of said zones; the time T taken by the vehicle to pass along the monitored stretch of road is determined as the difference between the exit time T2 and the entry time T1; and the average speed V of the vehicle on the monitored stretch of road is determined using the formula V=S'ΔT. |
