[Problem] To provide a carbon electrode material for redox batteries, which is capable of improving battery energy efficiency by reducing the cell resistance during the initial charging and discharging. [Solution] A carbon electrode material for redox batteries, which is composed of a carbonaceous material having a pseudo-graphite crystal structure wherein the (002) plane spacing as determined by wide-angle X-ray diffraction is 3.43-3.60 Å, the crystallite size in the c-axis direction is 15-35 Å and the crystallite size in the a-axis direction is 30-75 Å, said carbonaceous material being configured such that: the number of bonded oxygen atoms in the surface as determined by XPS surface analysis is 2.5% or more of the total number of surface carbon atoms; and pores having a pore diameter within the range of 0.2-2 μm in the pore distribution as determined by a mercury intrusion method are present in the surface thereof. |
