FITTING OF HEARING DEVICES

The present invention relates to recipient fitting of a hearing device. An embodiment of the present invention determines the transmission loss for sound applied to the recipient by the hearing device. Separate gains are then determined for compensating for the determined transmission loss and the measured hearing loss of the recipient. For example, in an embodiment, the hearing device may compensate for transmission losses in a 1:1 manner (i.e., the transmission loss in 100% compensated for). The hearing device may apply a different gain to compensate for the hearing loss, such as a gain that is a fraction (e.g., 33-55%) of the measured hearing loss.

1. A method for fitting a hearing device for a recipient, the method comprising:
obtaining threshold levels for the recipient unaided by the hearing device; obtaining threshold levels indicative of a minimum signal for the hearing device that causes a hearing percept by the recipient; calculating a transmission loss using the threshold for the recipient unaided by the device and the threshold for the hearing device that causes a hearing percept by the recipient; generating one or more control settings using the calculated transmission loss; and providing the control settings to the hearing device so that the hearing device applies a gain to sound received by the hearing device that separately compensates for the transmission loss and a hearing loss of the recipient.
