A carburizing agent for the rapid carburization of pig iron or a mixture of pig iron and iron or pig iron scrap comprises blocks or bricks produced from a mixture of a substantially incombustible carbonaceous material in a finely divided form and a suitable agglomerant, the blocks or bricks traversing the part of the furnace above the blast tuy</>aeres in compact form and dissolving under this zone to produce a layer through which the molten pig iron filters. The carbonaceous material may be mixed with other elements such as manganese or silicon before agglomerating, and if combustible carbonaceous material such as powdered charcoal or sawdust is used it is treated with an alkali metal silicate or soda before use. In an example, pulverized graphite is mixed with a viscous organic adhesive such as molasses and compressed into bricks 1 cubic decimetre in size. Other adhesives such as glue tar or starch paste may be used instead of the molasses. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the pig iron &c. may be carburized by treating the molten iron in a ladle with the carburizing agents referred to above and also that petroleum coke may be used as a carburizing agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
|
