The present invention provides a polyester resin and poly(ethylene terephthalate) fiber having excellent hygroscopic properties. The present invention is a poly(ethylene terephthalate) fiber that contains a terminally modified polyester resin (I) obtained by copolymerizing a terminally capped poly(alkylene oxide) compound represented by formula (1) at a quantity of 5-19 mass% relative to the overall polymer. (In formula (1), R is at least one type of alkylene group having 1-12 carbon atoms, n is an integer between 90 and 460, and X is at least one type of group selected from among alkyl groups having 1-30 carbon atoms and aryl groups having 6-20 carbon atoms.)
