Waste paper is purified by treatment with water-soluble sulphuric acid derivatives of organic compounds, or with water - soluble salts or neutralization products thereof, which have a soap-like character, and are not precipitated by lime in aqueous solution. The organic compounds have the general formula R--X--R<1>--(Y--SO3H)n where R represents a hydrocarbon radical, X represents O or S, or the group COO, OCO, NR<2>CO, CONR<2>, SO2, NR<2>, SO2NR<2> or NR<2>SO2, R<2> being hydrogen, or a hydrocarbon radical, or X may be absent, Y represents O or S or may be absent, R<1> represents alkylene or, if Y is absent, an arylene radical, and n = 1 or 2. The sulphuric acid derivatives may be neutralized with alkalies, ammonia, or organic bases such as triethanolamine, cyclohexylamine, or pyridine, and may be used with alkali phosphates, with organic solvents, e.g. chlorinated or hydrogenated hydrocarbons, or alcohols of high molecular weight, or with Bentonite, fuller's earth, or Kieselguhr, or with other sulphonation products, e.g. Turkey red oil. The treating liquor may be separated for re-use and the pulp washed and re-made into paper.
|
