Disclosed is a transponder, transponder assembly, transceiver, monitoring system, method of installation, and kit for obtaining sensor data related to an idler roller of a belt conveyor system. The transponder is mountable to the idler roller and includes a wireless communication device and a temperature sensor. The microcontroller is configured to obtain a temperature measurement indicative of a temperature of a bearing of the idler roller, and transmit sensor data indicative of the temperature to a transceiver. The transceiver includes a second wireless communication device and a data bus transceiver. The second microcontroller is configured to: receive the sensor data transmitted by the transponder; process the sensor data to determine if an alert condition has been satisfied; in response to the alert condition being satisfied, transfer, via the data bus transceiver of the microcontroller to a diagnostic processing system, an alert and/or at least some of the sensor data.
