An engine element arrangement for an i.c. engine comprises an element body, eg cylinder housing or case 2, made from a first material and an insert 10A/10B attached to the element body 2 and made from a different material and comprising at least part of a recess 30 for supporting a bearing 70A, 70B. The insert 10A/10B may comprise two connected insert parts 10A, 10B which together define a recess 30 for supporting the bearing, eg a crankshaft bearing 70A, 70B. Additionally or alternatively, a cylinder head may be attached to the element body 2 by cylinder head bolts 5 engaging with threads 6 in the insert 10A, 10B. The element body 2 may be made from aluminium and/or magnesium alloy; the insert may be made from an iron alloy, eg cast iron or steel. The insert parts 10A, 10B may be reconnected by cap bolts 8 along a common fracture surface 60 starting at predefined notches 50. |
