发明名称 Improvements in electric primary cells
摘要 441,894. Batteries. GORDON, C. J., 10, Liberia Road, Highbury, London. Oct. 12, 1934, Nos. 29308/34 and 27052 /35. [Class 53] A primary cell has a magnesium electrode consisting of a group of elements each of which is wrapped in a layer of fibrous material. The elements are held together and placed in a casing so that spaces are provided between the elements and the casing and between the elements themselves. The fibrous layers extend into these spaces and are there exposed to the air which serves to depolarize the cell. The second electrode partly surrounds and is in contact with the fibrous layer covering each magnesium element. Figs. 1 and 2 show a single cell having a magnesium electrode consisting of four elements 1 each surrounded by wood wool and surrounded by a split carbon tube 3 forming the second electrode. The four magnesium elements are joined in parallel by wires 15 and the carbon tubes are joined in parallel by a strip of copper gauze 13, a connection being made to the gauze by a wire 16. The wires 15, 16 are connected to sockets moulded in an insulating cover 17. The fibrous layers project through the slits in the carbon elements and thus extend into the central space 14, Fig. 2, which is in contact with the outer air through holes 18 in the casing 9. The lower ends of the fibrous layers are in contact with a pad of cotton wool 20 which extends downwards into water 7 contained in a screw cap 23 which closes the lower end of the cell. A tablet of potassium bromide 12 rests on a ledge in the casing and forms the electrolyte. Alternatively the tablet 12 may be placed in the water in the cap 23, and the fibrous layers surrounding the magnesium elements may extend downwards into the water, the cotton wool 20 being dispensed with. Fig. 5 shows in plan a modification in which eight magnesium rods 1 each surrounded by wood wool are arranged in a circle, the enclosed space containing a pad 25 of cotton wool. The second electrode consists of a single moulded porous carbon cylinder 26. The lower end of the pad 25 dips into electrolyte in the bottom of the cell as shown in Fig. 4 and air has access to the interior of the cell through the spaces 14. The electrode 26 is closed by a cover 28 which is held in position by tongues 30 projecting from a metal strip 31 surrounding the electrode. The ends of the strip 31 are flanged and provided with a terminal 32. The electrolyte consists of a solution of potassium bromide or iodide and may be fed directly to the lower ends of the wood wool layers surrounding the rods 1, the pad 25 being omitted. Instead of magnesium, alloys of magnesium with aluminium and manganese may be used for the positive electrode.
