A locking mechanism 201 for an umbrella or portable shelter (101, fig 7) comprises a shaft 301 and a runner 303 which is slidable along the shaft. A locking member 302 is pivotably connected to the shaft and is pivotable between a locked position (fig. 5) and an unlocked position (fig. 4). In the locked position the runner is restricted from moving in an axial direction 501 along the shaft. The locking member is preferably received in a slot on the runner 316 when in the locked position. When in the unlocked position, or when in storage, the locking member is preferably rotated into an aperture 306 and enclosed by the aperture. A collar (308, fig.6) may be provided to restrict movement of the runner in an opposite axial direction along the shaft. Also disclosed is a method of erecting an umbrella or portable shelter. |
