A repetitious, accumulating recovery method for spilled oil compositions such as crude oil uses a oleophilic, hydrophobic, crosslink-coated, nonwoven mat, preferably colour pigmented, for intercepting unconfined oil compositions on water or coastlines. The high-void, resilient, skeletal structure of the mat enables the intercepted oil to be moved to a recovery station, then to be expelled by pressure jetting and collected for later processing. The skeletal mat is continually cleaned of oil and repeatedly reused. The expelled oil portions are accumulated for later refining. The resilient mat can be used as the oil interceptor in an oil intercepting boom which has floats (56) attached to tethers (57) supporting detachable panels (58) incorporating the web, or in an oil skimming device. The process is versatile and environmentally gentle. |
