A portable field device 11 (e.g. a tablet, PDA or laptop) communicates wirelessly with a remote information management device 12 (e.g. a central server). A data store, preferably on the management device, comprises information relating to instruments to be calibrated, preferably including identification, location, required frequency of calibration checks and calibration tolerances. The portable device receives calibration requests from the management device, a service operator inputting calibration data which is used to generate a calibration certificate 13 or error report. A barcode on the instrument may be scanned by the portable device and GPS may be used to confirm the correct instrument is calibrated. The portable device may print a calibration certificate or sticker, or may connect to a printer via Bluetooth™. The service operator may be identified at the portable device before performing calibration tasks. Thus time consuming and error prone manual processes, including filling out of paper forms, can be eliminated. |
