PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microscope capable of identifying the position of a spindle in an ovum with a simple operation, and a control method.SOLUTION: A microscope 1 includes: a light source 10; a condenser lens 14; an objective lens 18; a polarizer 11; a compensator 12 arranged on an optical path XA of the light source 10 between the condenser lens 14 and the polarizer 11 so as to be rotatable about the optical path XA, and adjusting the variation of retardation with respect to a sample S by transmitting only components of the light, which has transmitted through the polarizer 11, in a predetermined vibration direction, in accordance with a rotational angle from a reference position; a driving part 27 for rotating the compensator; and a control part 6 for increasing/decreasing the retardation by driving the compensator 12 within a range including, as a reference, a position where the retardation becomes zero. |
