[Class 7 (ii)] In a multi-cylinder engine operating with two-stage compression and having an air compressor delivering into a common inlet manifold, each of the cylinders being provided with an admission valve having a delayed closing characteristic so as to transfer part of the combustible charge from one cylinder into another under the pressure of the manifold and during a substantial portion of the suction stroke of the cylinder receiving the transferred charge, the combustible mixture is formed in a closed space under a pressure equal to that in the manifold. Air is delivered by a compressor 22, through cooled or heated passages or is divided therebetween according to the setting of a control valve, to a carburetter enclosed in a hood 2 to permit it to operate at the induction manifold pressure. To prevent the pressure from collapsing the float, a tube connects the interior thereof with the space in the hood. The temperature of the mixture entering the cylinders is controlled by altering the delayed closing of the inlet valves. The engine cam shaft drives a governor which rocks a shaft in which is mounted by a quick-threaded screw the shaft carrying the cam controlling the delayed-closing of the valve, the axial displacement of the cam altering the closure of the valve. An adjustable rod 28 connects the carburetter throttle control lever 25 to the control lever 26 of the inlet valve to the compressor and the pressure may be controlled by coupling a second inlet valve 19 to a piston 32 in a cylinder 31 open to the induction manifold, the piston being urged to oppose the manifold pressure by a spring 33 operating between the piston and an abutment tube 38 which engages a lever 34 connected at its other end to the throttle connecting rod 28, the pressure necessary to close the valve 19 thus increasing with wider throttle openings.
