发明名称 Galvanic cell, particularly an electrical accumulator
摘要 447,757. Batteries. ACCUMULATORENFABRIK AKT.-GES., 3, Askanischer-Platz, Berlin. Nov. 19, 1934, Nos. 33247 and 33248. Convention dates, Nov. 18, 1933 and Dec. 16, 1933. [Class 53] Accumulators which evolve gas when discharging or while idle are provided with chemical substances with which the evolved gases can combine or react. Catalysts may be incorporated in the substances to aid the reaction. The active material of the electrodes may be used for absorbing the gases in which case the electrodes project into the gas space above the electrolyte, and in the case of lead accumulators the positive electrodes are provided with a catalyst such as platinum or palladium. The absorbent material may alternatively be arranged as an auxiliary electrode which can be removed from the electrolyte. In the case of alkaline accumulators the active material may be contained in platinized pockets, or the iron electrode may be constructed with the upper part made of cadmium containing a platinum metal, this upper part projecting into the gas space. The substances produced by the interaction of the gases with the absorbent materials are converted into the original materials when the accumulator is charged. Fig. 1 shows an accumulator in which only the positive electrode evolves gas on discharge or while idle. An additional chamber e is connected to the accumulator by a tube r and both compartments of the container a are provided with valves or stoppers v<1>, v<2>. During charging the stopper v<2> is closed and v<1> opened to allow gas to escape. After charging both stoppers are closed. Gas evolved from the positive electrodes then collects in the space s and forces electrolyte into the chamber e until the negative electrode becomes exposed. The gas is then absorbed by the negative electrode. Before re-charging the stopper v<1> is opened to cause the electrolyte to rise and again cover the negative electrode which projects to a higher level than the positive. If both electrodes after-gas they are made of the same height so that both become exposed when the electrolyte sinks. In a modification, the expansion chamber e completely surrounds the accumulator cell and is connected therewith through a small opening. Fig. 3 shows a further modification in which both the positive and negative plates protrude into the gas space and are surrounded by a casing e open at both ends. When the cell is charged the electrolyte rises in the casing e owing to its decreased specific gravity and the upper absorbing parts of the electrodes become covered with electrolyte and are thus regenerated.
