[Class 100 (iv)] Paper-supports.-A detachable platen-roller is detachably mounted at one end in the carriage, and is mounted at the other end on a retractable shaft which passes through a bearing opening in the carriage and is provided with a coupling-latch for the platen. The platen B shown in the Figure is supported in the end plates 5, 6 of the carriage by means of detachable shaft D, and a shaft 8 provided with a coupling for the line-spacing wheel. The coupling is of known form and comprises a cup 11 secured to the line-spacing wheel and formed with internal teeth 24 co-operating with a spring-urged toothed disc which is provided with a tongue 27a engaging slots 12, 20 in the shaft 8 and the head 18 of the platen. The shaft D passes through a bearing 30 on the plate 5 and is received by a sleeve C attached to the platen, the shaft and platen being normally coupled by co-operation of the forked end 43 of the shaft with a crosspin 44 in the sleeve. A latch 37 for preventing withdrawal of the shaft is pivoted therein and is held by a spring plunger 41 in engagement with either of a pair of holes 40 in the sleeve. The latch is released by pressing inwards a spring plunger 50 having a coned end engaging a notch 56 in the latch. On release of the latch, the shaft can be withdrawn or detached, and the platen can then be removed from the carriage. The platen and the knob 9 of the shaft 8 are provided with marks which are brought to the top, to ensure that the slots 12, 20 are in register before the platen is removed or replaced. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the latch 37 may be omitted, in which case the shaft D is formed at the end with a spring-fork having seats for receiving the pin 44. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
