The method involves transporting the flat workpieces (20,21) in longitudinal transport direction (x) into a working area (3) such that the workpieces are arranged one behind the other individually or in a connected manner. A workpiece holder (16) is adjusted between holding position and open position to temporarily retain the workpieces in working area. The workpiece holder is provided with holding portions (16a,16b,) which are displaced from open position into holding position in successive manner from rear side to front side in transverse transport direction (y).
