In one aspect of the teachings herein, a Machine-to-Machine, M2M, network advantageously exploits the routing capabilities of a Session Initiation Protocol, SIP, based network, for communicatively linking M2M entities within a M2M network domain. For example, a number of SIP gateways are communicatively interlinked through an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem, IMS, core network as the SIP-based network. Each SIP gateway may be regarded as defining or being associated with a localized domain within the larger M2M network domain. M2M requests involving M2M entities commonly associated with the same SIP gateway are locally routed within the corresponding localized domain, while M2M requests targeting M2M entities outside of the localized domain are advantageously routed to the SIP-based network for efficient routing. |
