The invention relates to a device for producing a coal charge for coking, comprising an open stamping box (2) that defines the shape of the coal charge, at least one stamping element (3) for compacting ground coal (4) poured into the stamping box (2), and a main lifting device (5) that is provided for raising the stamping element (3) from the coal (4) and letting same fall down onto the coal (4). According to the invention, the device has an auxiliary lifting device (6) that is provided to support the main lifting device (5) when raising the stamping element (3), in order to increase an upward lifting capacity of the device (1). For the intended purpose, the movements of the main lifting device (5) and the auxiliary lifting device (6) are mechanically or electronically synchronised with one another. In one embodiment of the invention, the device (1) comprises a drive unit (16), by means of which the main lifting device (5) or the auxiliary lifting device (6) can be directly driven, and the main lifting device (5) and the auxiliary lifting device (6) are connected to one another in such a way that a movement generated by the drive unit (16) can be transmitted from the main lifting device (5) to the auxiliary lifting device (6), or from the auxiliary lifting device (6) to the main lifting device (5). The invention also relates to a method for producing a coal charge, and a method for retrofitting a device for the production of a coal charge.
