The present invention relates to a piston (1) for an internal combustion engine, comprising: a piston head (2) and a combustion bowl (3) introduced therein; an annular groove (4) located next to the piston head; and a cooling channel (5) for cooling the piston (1). According to the invention: the entire cooling channel (5) has a smaller distance to the piston head (2) than the flank (21) located away from the piston head of the annular groove (4) that is next to the piston head; the cooling channel (5) has a minimum distance (6) to the piston head (2) in a first place (8), a minimum distance (7) to the combustion bowl (3) in a second place (9), and in-between has a maximum distance (17) to an edge of the bowl (16) in a third place (18); the cooling channel (5) is formed in a rounded manner between the first place (8) and the second place (9), wherein the rounding has a rounding radius at least in the third place (18) and preferably at least up to the the second place (9), which rounding radius is greater than 4% of the piston diameter d.
